Epinephelus daemelii (Spotted black groper). The Spotted black groper are rare in mainland New Zealand but will be seen as small sub-adults occupying the same cave or overhang for many years. The fish in the picture is a larger adult of over 1m in length and was spotted several times on a deep reef in the Far North. At the Kermadec Islands adults may grow up to 2m in length, attain >68kg in weight, and live for more than 65 years. The Spotted black groper is protected in New Zealand under the Wildlife Act 1953.
